4th year ESO students from the Santa Magdalena Sofía school visited Marina Port de Mallorca to put into practice the knowledge they are currently working on in class. Professor Jaime Ripoll explains that, to do this, “they have manufactured some traps that they placed at strategic points in the marina to study how a marine ecosystem evolves.” In order to evaluate the progress of this experiment, they will analyze the traps that they will collect at intervals throughout the course. "As the weeks go by, they will colonize (primary succession) and after a couple of months, we will take one trap out to clean it and reintroduce it to the water (secondary succession) to compare which grows faster, a primary or a secondary succession". - Ripoll has detailed.
Once their activity was finished, the Port Captain, José María Marroig, explained in detail the activities that Marina Port de Mallorca carries out to encourage care for the environment among clients and promote care of the sea.
Among the activities that caught their attention is the use of the Seabin, the trash can that collects plastics from the sea and has a system capable of filtering up to 25,000 Lph (liters per hour), with the capacity to clean 1.5 kg of plastic and garbage per day. Their curiosity was also aroused by the system of anti-pollution barriers that the marina has to deploy in the event of spillage into the sea.
At the end of the visit and to regain strength before returning to class, the students enjoyed a snack while saying goodbye until the next visit.
Because, in accordance with its environmental policy, Marina Port de Mallorca periodically carries out activities related to the promotion and preservation of the environment and this is one of its actions for which it holds environmental accreditations such as the Blue Flag, Registration in the Carbon Footprint Registry, EMAS, in addition to its commitment to Global Compact.
